Dara Torres is a 41-year-old mother who has had surgery on her shoulder and her knee in the past 8 months. She’s not someone you would think just qualified for the Olympics. Her fifth Olympics.
Torres will be competing in the 100 meter freestyle and 50 meter freestyle. While qualifying she overcame competitors half her age. Torres uses resistance training and focuses on her core. This strength training is what she and her doctors credit to her success. Most professional athletes are finished by her age, but she presses on.
Joel Stager, and exercise physiologist at Indiana University said, “It shows us what we can do. It’s just that most of us don’t.”

Admit it, you probably don’t even know where the Simpson Desert is. I didn’t until I heard this story. A Belgian man, Louis-Phillipe Loncke, is about to set out to attempt to cross the Simpson Desert in the central Australian Outback. It is one of the most inhospitable places you could think of for an adventure like this.
How is he going to do this? On foot of course. Pulling a specially designed, two-wheeled cart. He will follow the purple dotted line to the left. (No, there is not actually a purple line across the desert) He chose the North-South route because it would allow him to see places that very few humans have ever seen. He has garnered corporate sponsorship to help him make this adventure a reality.
He is also encouraging people to check out “Art in All of Us” a non-profit organization he is trying to raise awareness for through this journey. “Art in All of Us promotes tolerance with creative cultural exchange activities throughout the 193 UN listed countries, using Art. Inspiring the children around the world is part of our Mission and Itinerary”
He is making final preperations for his trip. You can follow along at his website.
Good luck Louis!

Besides what you might think of the dirty Chinese political landscape, these 2008 Olympics are looking to be one of the dirtiest on record. And by dirty, I mean air pollution. China is #2 when it comes to producing the most air pollution. Way to go!
Most everyone has heard by now that China is charged with cleaning up it’s air by the time the Beijing Olympics roll around in a few weeks.
Currently China is trying to curb the pollution by only allowing half of government vehicles on the road. Then on July 20th citizens will only be allowed to drive their cars on the road every other day. This “should”cut the traffic in half. But there is worry that it won’t be enough. The air there is still extremely smoggy, and too thick and polluted to work out in.
The image below, from NASA, shows the amount of pollution visible in China from space. Notice the gray…

With protesters, pollution, and inevitable doping scandals, this will be an interesting Olympics to say the least.

As you may know, one of the biggest and baddest adventure races on the planet is underway. Primal Quest 2008 got underway yesterday and is running through this week and next week. Teams are racing through Montana and encountering a number of obstacles as they make their way through the different adventure sports involved.
This year you can track the teams here through SPOT technology. SPOT Satellite Messengers are small handheld devices you can take in the backcountry to signal out for help in case of an emergency. They use satellite technology so you can get a signal out even if your cell phone is out of range
“This year we are really elevating the Primal Quest experience by teaming up with SPOT and offering the best, custom leaderboard and mapping software we’ve seen to date,” states Don Mann, Primal Quest Director.

Race fans can register for a chance to win a SPOT Satellite Messenger signed by the winning team and learn more about Primal Quest Montana 2008 Presented by SPOT at www.findmespot.com/primalquest

Yes, another contest!
This one has a ridiculous acronym for a name; to make it sound more official and more important. You’ll be competing for the coveted Outdoor Service Preservation Environment and Conservation Award. Or The OSPEC… Not OPEC, or OSEC, or OTEC.
All we need you to do is tell your story. You can comment here on this blog post, or on our forums page. Tell us of your best experience in the outdoors serving, preserving, helping the environment, or conserving. Maybe you did some trail work, maybe you helped kids learn how to ski… whatever you did, inspire us!
We’ll pick 5 winners from the stories we get. Each of the winners will get an Outdoorzy T-shirt, and a Summit Stone. We may even throw in some other swag from the Outdoorzy swag box here at Outdoorzy HQ.
If you don’t have an outdoor volunteer experience, make one! We encourage everyone to get out and donate a little time. I volunteer at the humane society from time to time and I get to combine being outdoors with animals, two things I love. I walk the dogs for an hour or two and have a great time doing it.
If you need a place to start, try searching online. We even have a few in our Business Diretory like Big City Mountaineers.
DSD from Summit Stones and Adventure Musings is providing the stones. Thanks for all the help with this DSD

Adventure Trip Magazine launched this week. You won’t find it at Barnes & Noble though, or at the airport newstand. It is and online-only magazine… or Ezine.

You also won’t be paying for a subscription. The magazine is completely free. You just sign up by leaving your email address and they’ll email you each month letting you know what the latest articles are so you can choose to read them or not. You can also sign up through RSS, or just bookmark the site and check it out whenever you get a hankerin for Adventure.
The site is a collaborative of several outdoor and adventure writers, photographers, and bloggers like Peter Spiller, Kraig Becker, and Ben Burner. I am also happy to be a part of this, and we’re having a blast. The articles cover all aspects of Adventure Travel. The focus is to fill you in on how to take that dream trip, OR how to find that close-to-home adventure hub. Drop by today and read up on Machu Picchu, The Top Ten Adventure Cities, or Antelope Canyon.
If you fancy yourself a writer and would like to submit an article to Adventure Trip, shoot us an email at editor@adventuretripmagazine. Who knows, your article could end up on the front page next month

Drew Wheelan has created something very special. I’ll let his video tell the rest.

I met this guy earlier this summer in Mexico and had no idea he had created such a neat foundation. I ran into him again last night and got a chance to learn about what he is doing in Africa. I don’t think anybody reading MY blog posts is looking for insight or inspiration… But this is too cool not to pass along. Don’t worry, I’ll be back with more “body function humor” before you know it.

Apparently now was not the time for Nau. The company recently announced that they could not secure the funding to continue their operation. They left a statement on their homepage explaining their saddness at the closing and a few hints at why they feel they didn’t make it.
They are offering 50% off their entire line while going out of business.
For those of you not familiar with Nau, they were an active lifestyle clothing company that used sustainable business practices. It’s too bad that Nau didn’t make it, but in a market where so many other outdoor clothing companies like Patagonia already have a hold on the market and are already using sustainable practices, its’ a tough race. I’m sure the staff over at Nau will easily find employment somewhere in the outdoor industry. What a great experience to be part of a cutting edge company.

Here are some random pics from the Dirt Mud, Sweat, and Gears Festival in Fayetteville Tennessee. They put on a great race this year and we met some cool people, vendors, outdoorzy members, racers, and spectators. There were stitches sewn into legs, tendons torn, clogged wheels, a mess of dérailleur hangers broken, lots of Outdoorzy t-shirts given out, Gary Fischer himself was on hand representin, several frames, and some full bikes were given away, and $125 worth of gift certificates to the Outdoorzy Store were awarded.
Tinker Juarez came out on top in the men’s solo division, Pua Sawicki for the women’s. And the National Mountain Bike team came in 2nd in the “Here for the Beer” category, with JmacTN getting the award for crappiest/muddiest lap.
Now on to the pics…
