And the Bike Winner is…..

First off, I have been overwhelmed by the tremendous response to this contest. We had over 600 entries into the contest and we appreciate every one of them.

Secondly I’d like to thank Lipton Tea. They have been very gracious in sponsoring this contest and they make some great tea too. They wow’d me with their latest White Tea, I used the Raspberry To-Go packets on the AT a few weeks ago. Very convenient to just pour that little powder in your water bottle. But Lipton…. you had me at Green… you had me at Green

Okay, enough rambling! The bike winner is Anne Ursu!

Here’s what Anne had to say when I told her she won…

“You are KIDDING me! I can’t believe it!”

“I am a writer living in Ohio. Ever since we had a baby I dreamed of taking family bike trips. I bought a bike trailer for the baby at a garage sale, but my husband does not have a working bike. Our family will have so much fun together….”

And we’re excited to be giving this bike away to such a deserving family.

We’re Giving Away a Bike!

We’ve teamed up with Lipton to bring you guys and gals this great contest. It’s just like most of our contests here on Outdoorzy, in that it’s easy to sign-up. But the stakes are much higher this time folks, we’re giving away this Fuji Crosstown 2.0.

Lipton is no front-porch sippin tea. They are promoting an active lifestyle, and they have the products to go along with that lifestyle. They recently sponsored a video contest where people showed their active lifestyle off by submitting a video to win prizes. There are some crazy ones and some hilarious ones toos. Check out the Free Your Y Contest. You can vote on your favorite video to ensure an “outdoor” activity wins the field of submissions. :) Voting begins tomorrow.

Check out the new White Tea products while you’re there as well. White Tea has Antioxidants, Theanine, Caffeine, and H20, which are all good for the activities we love most.

Lots of Swag at Dirt Sweat and Gears

Dirt Sweat and Gears is the big mountain biking event in the Southeast US each year. And the Outdoorzy team will be in attendance. It will be happening the first weekend in May, and we have it marked on the calendar and we can’t wait to get down there and have some fun. There will be musical performances, tons of free swag (including bike give-aways), lots of outdoor loving people, oh yeah… and lots of mountain bike races!

Outdoorzy will be giving away loads of gift cards to the Outdoorzy Store so you can load up on cycling gear and any other fun summer outdoor gear and clothing you need. Not to mention lots of other gear and freebies. Just drop by our tent and check us out. It won’t be hard to find us, we’ll be the ones with the big Outdoorzy.com banner. There will be plenty of other vendors there as well.

If you’re looking for something to do that weekend and you’re within driving distance come on up and check out all the excitement in Fayetteville Tennessee.

Into the Wild 2-Disc DVD - Review and Contest

I was given the opportunity to review the Into the Wild 2-Disc DVD set this past week. It was released a few weeks ago and should be available anywhere you buy DVDs. If you’d like to win a FREE copy just drop by the Forum and post why you want a copy… we’ll select a winner next week and get you a copy of this great film!

As far as the film goes, it was excellent. Although it didn’t end up winning an Oscar, Into the Wild was definitely recognized as one of the better flicks this year.

Here are the stats…

Pricing: $29.99 U.S./$36.99 Canada (Single-disc DVD)

$39.99 U.S./$45.99 Canada (Two-Disc Special Edition DVD)

Runtime: 148 minutes

U.S. Rating: R for language and some nudity

Canadian Rating: 14A for coarse language, nudity and sexual content

I thought the 2 disc set I reviewed had all that you would expect and more. It includes sections for The Story and The Characters where you will see interviews with all the actors and their thoughts on the story as well as the film. You’ll also see behind the scenes footage from the set. There is also an interview with Jon Krakauer which is pretty interesting.

The Experience is a section that includes more detail on what us Outdoor fanatics want to see… the locations. It gets into more detail on the 30 places the crew filmed at along with information from the director Sean Penn. There is also some commentary from Eddie Vedder, who created the soundtrack for the film.

If you get a chance to check this film out or pick up the 2 disc set, I’d do it. It’s one of those movies that you’ll finish and then talk about for days to come with whomever you watched it with. Then you’ll start asking people if they saw it, and what they thought of it.

New Zealand Style Adventure

Okay, tell me this New Zealand Trip isn’t the coolest adventure ever.

There aren’t many of us out there who can’t say that a trip to New Zealand is not on our life list. I have to say, it’s definitely in my top 5 places I have to go before I croak. Why? Well, white sandy beaches, black sandy beaches, rugged mountains, glaciers, wineries, epic trekking, and people who say FEED EEKS when they want to send something Fed Ex. What more do you want in a vacation?

So we’re teaming up with 100% Pure New Zealand to get you dreaming…

If you want to win the Kelty Tahoma daypack and a Lonely Planet Travel Book, just tell us what you’d do if you could spend a week in New Zealand. If we pick your story, you get the prizes… it’s that simple.

So head on over to the Forum to enter yourself in the contest and let us know what you’d do if you had a week in NZ?

Check out NewZealand.com to get some ideas… and trust me there are plenty.

SkullCandy Brings the Noise

SkullCandy makes headphones, pretty darn good uns too. You want a pair? Okay, read this to see how to get a free pair. Seriously…

I recently got set of these headphones and at first site I thought, okay…. so. But when I plugged them into my MP3 player and started listening to a little 311 (I know I’m old skool) I could see what the buzz was about.

They have a really clear and powerful sound for a small set of speakers. They were comfortable, and seemed reasonably durable. I wasn’t so sure about the part that wraps over your head yet. It seemed a bit, well plasticy. BUT I gave them a good twist one way, then the other… then did that again. They didn’t even creak or moan. So that test went well.

Now would they stand the test of being packed in my backpack, stuffed under an airplane seat, pulled out, dropped, picked up, squished, mashed, scattered, smothered, covered, diced, and chunked. You get the picture….

And, they did. So, my final verdict is 8.5 out of 10. They are $29.95 over at SkullCandy.com, but hey… you could buy a $10 set, then break them the next week. Or get something that is decent. AND, has a SKULL on it. Sweeet.

And what the heck, we are all about contests this week. You want a pair? Send me the name of the 3 bands you’d listen to first on your new set of SkullCandy phones… Let me know over on the Forum and, well, I’ll pick somebody to take a pair home and rock out.

Sunburn from Hell!

Okay, so you know how we do it here at Outdoorzy. We like to give prizes away when we can. This most recent contest was sponsored by Sierra Summits. They make sunblock, bug repellent, and other great skin products for active people like us.

sierra summitsThe contest was simple. Tell the worst sunburn story, and win a pack of skincare products from Sierra Summits. Let me tell you, this one was hard. All the stories submitted were great. It was alot of fun, and a bit distrubing reading them. :) So, without further adieu, the winner is laclimchick!

And here’s her story.

Mine would have to be spring break when I was 15 in St. Thomas. First day we went to the beach to get sun and windsurf. I guess when I sat down on the beach chair the sun screen wore off behind my knees and upper calves. That night I could not walk at all. My legs were huge, so I applied after sun care stuff to help. Two days later it was still bad and I was stuck inside. My dad took me to an “island” doctor. No English at all and they told me to take antibiotics. They said the name and it was the anthrax medicine so mom told me no. Next day really could not walk and apparently my legs were having this blue tint to them on the back. The only thing I could wear was skirts. So we went to this other doctor and he was American. First of all never put cream or anything like that on a burn, it just holds the heat in. I got put on Vicadin and prednisone and benedryll. No idea on spellings here. This is when we found out I was allergic go benedryll. I could not sit still, I kept laughing and shaking and rocking back and forth and I saw dolphins standing in front of me. Then I passed out.

So now my legs never really get that tan anymore because I freak out. It was so painful.
