Contest - Gear Grab Bags for You

The one thing all of us that visit this blog, and Outdoorzy have in common is an appreciation for the outdoors. A love of being outside and taking part in an active lifestyle. We can all agree on that. But I believe one other thing that is a very close 2nd at binding us all is our love of the gear that gets us out there.

So this week I will be attending the Outdoor Retailer conference in Salt Lake City, UT. For the uninitiated this is the big trade show that the outdoor industry holds each year. All the new gear is debuted, new companies launch, the gear that was new this year is upgraded, and people shmooze.

My goal this week is to gain entry to this show, visit every booth (probably thousands), blog multiple times a

day, and keep all of you up-to-date on what is coming out for 2009. Just imagine, this year, you can be that one friend that is always like “..oh, did you say the Moutain Hardwear Goat Jacket? Yeah I know that one, has the fleece liner and the built in martini bar in the inside pocket.” Yes you! You’ll be the coolest Outdoorzy friend on your block. You can show your friends you’re the real deal, not Matthew McConaughey outdoorsy. No need to drive an old Land Rover Discovery, or leave your canoe on your roof rack all week. You’ll have the 4-1-1 and can talk the talk. :)

Anywho, in celebration of this event we want to give you some Gear. The first 3 people to enter 8 gear reviews before Friday night will win one of three prize packs. The prize packs are like outdoorsy grab bags. They are each going to be a high quality daypack full of little gear items. Who knows what you’ll get… clothing, guidebooks, headlamps, solar chargers, mp3 players, t-shirts, shoes, water filter??? Gear freebies I pick up to review at this trade show will go into the 3 daypacks. You’ll be the first one to get your hands on some of these items.

So get hoppin! And your gear review doesn’t count if you half-ass it. Don’t review your new climbing harness and say “It was great, it kept me alive” We want more detail than that people….. work for it!

Casting for Discovery Channel Alaskan Adventure

Looking for some adventure? Tired of working in boring places not named Alaska. Well Discovery has something for you.

Discovery Channel, the network that brought you “The Alaska Experiment,” is currently casting its next Alaskan adventure. They’re looking for people who think they have what it takes to live and thrive in one of nature’s most brutal environments.

Discovery Channel’s newest series raises the bar for our adventurers by sending them on an epic journey through the wild. The challenge — if you dare to accept it — is to join a band of fellow explorers and journey through some of the harshest climates and roughest terrains in the world: the Alaskan wilderness.

Sound exhilarating? It will be! If you are ready to leave the monotony of your day-to-day life behind and push yourself to the limits, you can finally earn the right to say that you truly lived.

Feel like giving it a shot? Applications end soon! If you get on though, you must finish every sentence with outdoorzy.com.

“Dang it sure is cold out here, outdoorzy.com”

“That polar bear ate 3 of my fingers, outdoorzy.com”

First Annual OSPEC Awards

Yes, another contest!

This one has a ridiculous acronym for a name; to make it sound more official and more important. You’ll be competing for the coveted Outdoor Service Preservation Environment and Conservation Award. Or The OSPEC… Not OPEC, or OSEC, or OTEC.

All we need you to do is tell your story. You can comment here on this blog post, or on our forums page. Tell us of your best experience in the outdoors serving, preserving, helping the environment, or conserving. Maybe you did some trail work, maybe you helped kids learn how to ski… whatever you did, inspire us!

We’ll pick 5 winners from the stories we get. Each of the winners will get an Outdoorzy T-shirt, and a Summit Stone. We may even throw in some other swag from the Outdoorzy swag box here at Outdoorzy HQ.

If you don’t have an outdoor volunteer experience, make one! We encourage everyone to get out and donate a little time. I volunteer at the humane society from time to time and I get to combine being outdoors with animals, two things I love. I walk the dogs for an hour or two and have a great time doing it.

If you need a place to start, try searching online. We even have a few in our Business Diretory like Big City Mountaineers.

DSD from Summit Stones and Adventure Musings is providing the stones. Thanks for all the help with this DSD

And the Bike Winner is…..

First off, I have been overwhelmed by the tremendous response to this contest. We had over 600 entries into the contest and we appreciate every one of them.

Secondly I’d like to thank Lipton Tea. They have been very gracious in sponsoring this contest and they make some great tea too. They wow’d me with their latest White Tea, I used the Raspberry To-Go packets on the AT a few weeks ago. Very convenient to just pour that little powder in your water bottle. But Lipton…. you had me at Green… you had me at Green

Okay, enough rambling! The bike winner is Anne Ursu!

Here’s what Anne had to say when I told her she won…

“You are KIDDING me! I can’t believe it!”

“I am a writer living in Ohio. Ever since we had a baby I dreamed of taking family bike trips. I bought a bike trailer for the baby at a garage sale, but my husband does not have a working bike. Our family will have so much fun together….”

And we’re excited to be giving this bike away to such a deserving family.

We’re Giving Away a Bike!

We’ve teamed up with Lipton to bring you guys and gals this great contest. It’s just like most of our contests here on Outdoorzy, in that it’s easy to sign-up. But the stakes are much higher this time folks, we’re giving away this Fuji Crosstown 2.0.

Lipton is no front-porch sippin tea. They are promoting an active lifestyle, and they have the products to go along with that lifestyle. They recently sponsored a video contest where people showed their active lifestyle off by submitting a video to win prizes. There are some crazy ones and some hilarious ones toos. Check out the Free Your Y Contest. You can vote on your favorite video to ensure an “outdoor” activity wins the field of submissions. :) Voting begins tomorrow.

Check out the new White Tea products while you’re there as well. White Tea has Antioxidants, Theanine, Caffeine, and H20, which are all good for the activities we love most.

How to Enter:

There are 3 Ways to enter… Pick one! The winner will be announced in 2 weeks on this blog.

1. Leave your Full Name in a comment on this blog post (your email is entered when you comment but is private)

2. Shoot us an Email at Info@Outdoorzy.com with your full name (we’ll get your email from the From line)

3. Comment on the Forum Post we have going on at the Outdoorzy Forum and since Members can only post we’ll get in touch with your through your Profile if you win.

Neither Pepsi Co., Outdoorzy, nor Unilever is liable for any injuries, damages or accidents that may result from the receipt, assembly or use of this bicycle.

Lots of Swag at Dirt Sweat and Gears

Dirt Sweat and Gears is the big mountain biking event in the Southeast US each year. And the Outdoorzy team will be in attendance. It will be happening the first weekend in May, and we have it marked on the calendar and we can’t wait to get down there and have some fun. There will be musical performances, tons of free swag (including bike give-aways), lots of outdoor loving people, oh yeah… and lots of mountain bike races!

Outdoorzy will be giving away loads of gift cards to the Outdoorzy Store so you can load up on cycling gear and any other fun summer outdoor gear and clothing you need. Not to mention lots of other gear and freebies. Just drop by our tent and check us out. It won’t be hard to find us, we’ll be the ones with the big Outdoorzy.com banner. There will be plenty of other vendors there as well.

If you’re looking for something to do that weekend and you’re within driving distance come on up and check out all the excitement in Fayetteville Tennessee.

Into the Wild 2-Disc DVD - Review and Contest

I was given the opportunity to review the Into the Wild 2-Disc DVD set this past week. It was released a few weeks ago and should be available anywhere you buy DVDs. If you’d like to win a FREE copy just drop by the Forum and post why you want a copy… we’ll select a winner next week and get you a copy of this great film!

As far as the film goes, it was excellent. Although it didn’t end up winning an Oscar, Into the Wild was definitely recognized as one of the better flicks this year.

Here are the stats…

Pricing: $29.99 U.S./$36.99 Canada (Single-disc DVD)

$39.99 U.S./$45.99 Canada (Two-Disc Special Edition DVD)

Runtime: 148 minutes

U.S. Rating: R for language and some nudity

Canadian Rating: 14A for coarse language, nudity and sexual content

I thought the 2 disc set I reviewed had all that you would expect and more. It includes sections for The Story and The Characters where you will see interviews with all the actors and their thoughts on the story as well as the film. You’ll also see behind the scenes footage from the set. There is also an interview with Jon Krakauer which is pretty interesting.

The Experience is a section that includes more detail on what us Outdoor fanatics want to see… the locations. It gets into more detail on the 30 places the crew filmed at along with information from the director Sean Penn. There is also some commentary from Eddie Vedder, who created the soundtrack for the film.

If you get a chance to check this film out or pick up the 2 disc set, I’d do it. It’s one of those movies that you’ll finish and then talk about for days to come with whomever you watched it with. Then you’ll start asking people if they saw it, and what they thought of it.
