Tech4o Traileader JET Watch

I'm gonna make a bold statement here... this is perhaps one of the best watches I've ever reviewed. I've tested 5-10 in the last year alone.

Tech4o Traileader JET

traileader-jetThe Trail Leader JET is impressive out of the gate with it's stealthy styling. The reverse LED display and non-glare mineral glass face will make you feel more like a spy or a Navy SEAL than a backpacker.

The Traileader boasts all the features you would expect an active lifestyle watch to have; altimeter, barometer, thermometer, stopwatch, dual time, alarms, and this thing which tells time. But it also measures your speed and distance... and accurately at that.

I tested the watch on a running course through my neighborhood which measured at 2.54 with my car. The car is a close estimate I understand, since there are two points at which I have to do a 3-point turn in order to measure the turn-arounds. The Traileader Jet measured the distance at 2.597, strikingly close. I fully expected the watch to show a distance at least 2-3 10ths of a mile off. This was without adjusting the stride too. You can calibrate the watch to your specific stride length to get more accurate measurements. Oh Iphone, thanks for bringing the accelerometer into the mainstream.

You might be asking yourslef, "How does an accelerometer work though?" Here's what Tech4o had to say:

"The key to the accuracy of Tech4o watches lies within their accelerometer sensor. The accelerometer sensor works by first detecting changes in the user's movement (acceleration) that are translated into varying degrees of electric current within the sensor. These electric currents are instantly decoded by the Tech4o watches into highly accurate measurements of speed and distance and displayed on the watch face"

Make sense? Ah, who cares. It's a cool gadget that actually works.

At $159.90 it's a real bargain for such a top-notch piece of gear.

  4. Follow-up notes
    - This watch is not waterproof. It is water resistant. Do not submerge the watch in water or you may find condensation inside.

    - On a recent 3 1/2 day hike the speed/distance was accurate within a few 10ths of a mile each day.

    - According to Tech4os website, there is no Womens' version yet. I wouldn't doubt if they released one soon though. They have several other high tech women's watches to choose from.
