National Geographic Adventure just celebrated 10 years of publication and is now calling it quits. National Geographic's Adventure magazine was a gem of a publication but is now closing it's doors. Many of us subscribed or picked up a copy in an airport or bookstore and read it over the years. Compelling stories and soul stirring photography are trademarks of the National Geographic brand, and Adventure was no exception.
The Adventure Life reported that advertising for NGA was down 44%, and as we know advertising is the all important factor in the magazine industry. Pick up a copy of Oprah's magazine if you want to see an example of a magazine that overdoes ads but is still kicking.
I think of their content, I will miss the Adventurer of the Year series, Trips of the Year, and the many destination pieces that have been published there over the years. A magazine that stoked the fire of adventure will be missed. Outside, Backpacker, and all the other camping, paddling, and climbing magazines have some big shoes to fill. Wonder who will step up?

I thought that NG was just selling the brand? Are they just shutting it down completely instead?
NGA is the best nature magazine ever!

I've heard they had been looking for a buyer, but hadn't had any luck.
Sorry man, but I have to say I saw this one coming. Most people can't afford the trips that they featured. I let my subscription expire because I actually got tired of seeing all of the places in the world that I can't afford to see.
Good point Abenson. The magazine tended to have quite a few international trips. I think for many it served as inspirational travel writing. I did see on The Adventure Blog that a letter was released saying there would be special editions of the magazine still published. So it may not go away completely.
[...] that is exciting! Let’s hope that it sticks around and doesn’t go the way of National Geographic Adventure [...]
