Now for the ladies winter running gear round-up. We've included items that were tested by our female testers and all got an astounding thumbs up. Stay dry, warm, and fit this winter with the right gear for the season. Guys pay attention... gift idea alert.
The Socks - Swift
The Swift sock by Merrell makes for a great way to ward off blisters. Combining synthetic materials with merino wool cushioning reduces friction around the heel and toe area. The socks wick well which makes them ideal for a wide range of temperatures, allowing you to use them not only this winter but year round. The swift sock will cost you $15, which is the perfect stocking stuffer price. So put these socks in your sock this year, or send those shopping for you a link to the socks to drop a little hint. If you're lucky you'll get more than one pair. Good thing they come in two colors (pink and blue).
The Vest - Woolrich Mount Forest TechnoWool X Vest
With a mouthful of a name like that this vest can be intimidating. But once our tester slipped into it she forgot the real name and just called it "heaven." The warm "technowool" is toasty using it's natural fibers to keep you dry during a run. The chest pocket stores a Gu packet, mp3 player, or phone for the longer workouts. Or use the internal gadget pocket to keep your electronics even further away from the elements. Hand pockets give you a place to keep your gloves or get your hands out of the wind. Our tester was equally impressed with the Mount Forest's ability to convert into work or play mode. The vest is fashionable enough to wear out on the town, to work, or even to a more formal event. Other handy features included the 2 way zipper and fleece lined neck which kept our tester comfortable when using the vest as a 2nd layer.
The Shoes - ST Stature II
A true trail runner, the ST Stature II is built for the runner who prefers trails and has mild to moderately pronates their foot when they land. Our reviewer was impressed with the Merrell Stature. Our tester had this to say for these trail queens; "They have a built in sock which sealed to my feet. They didn't slip on the heel at all which was nice and had a roomy toebox. The Stature had good traction and actually worked equally well on pavement. I talked with my running mate and didn't think about my feet for the entire the 4 mile run." The Stature is designed to compete with top of the line running shoes and our tester thought it compared well to her previous high-end Saucony's. The Merrell ST Stature II retails for $125.
The Gadget - Origo Paso Pedometer
Who wants to drive around their neighborhood in their car after a run to see how far they went? Not me! Outfitting yourself with a good pedometer is a step toward serious running. Accurate to within two feet per mile, each Paso Pedometer will offer a variety of data including calories burned calculator, distance traveled, target step count, wake up alarm, and activity timer. New features for 2009 allow you to record and compare workouts for up to seven days, set and track daily and weekly goals, and monitor your current speed. Getting ready fore that 10k, half, or full marathon in the Spring... this is the way to accurately keep your running schedule. The large LCD display and push button backlight provide superior readability. Water resistant to 30 meters, the Paso is an all conditions, go anywhere workout companion. A one-year warranty backs this up, and it retails for a scant $40.
The Jacket - Merrell Destination
Merrell is continuously beefing up their line of active wear and they are paying particular attention to women's active apparel. They definitely caught our attention this year with their deep offering for women. It is a scientific fact that women normally feel colder than men in cool temps. The female body conserves heat better than a man's but this typically means less blood flow to extremities. Thus, layering is critical for women. Often in very cold weather a base layer, jacket, vest, and even a rain shell may be needed to really keep the heat in. The Merrell Destination jacket is a thin fleece outer that hugs the curves of the female figure. Snugly fitting the body, yet stretching to adjust to varying body shapes, the Destination holds heat in well. Specific features for runners are a plus, such as thumbholes to pull the sleeves down over your fists along with a fleece hood and pockets for stashing small items and keeping hands warm. This stylish jacket also works well for getting you from the car to the door of the gym or office. $85 at Merrell.com
