Eureka Tundraline - An Affordable Bombproof 4 Season Tent

Like it or not, this weekend marks the beginning of the shopping season. The holidays are upon us people, and what better way to show that special person you love them than by getting them a bombproof tent, ready for winter camping.

tundralineI've said it before, and I stand buy it: The measure of a good tent by many people is how quickly it can be set up the first time... without looking at instructions. The Eureka Tundraline came in under 10 minutes for me. The set up is no-nonsense. Two poles slide through continuous sleeves that don't allow the pole to escape as you slip it through. Then a minimum of 6 stakes are required to stake the tent out. At that point it is your choice whether to use more stake and use the guy lines to tighten the tent up for stability. When fully guyed out the Tundraline can withstand strong winds, heavy rain, or snow.

Touted as "the ultimate canoe camping tent," I can understand where this description came from. With ample floor space (51.6 square feet), two massive vestibules, and weatherproof construction it could stand up to the rigors of any paddling trip.Weighing in at a hefty 12 lbs this tent is no lightweight. Backpacking isn't it's primary function, although if the tent was split between 3 people for carrying it would be easily manageable. Car, canoe, mountaineering, or expedition camping is where the Eureka Tundraline shines.

eureka-tentOn the interior the Tundraline has 8 storage pockets and a flashlight loop. It is outfitted to use a gear loft, although that it sold separately. The inside also boasts 4 feet of stand up height; tall enough to stand in a crouching position and put your ski pants and jacket on for the next days activities. There are vestibules on both ends. With 44 square feet of vestibule space, there is plenty of room accommodate 3 full sized packs, boots, trekking poles, and still leave room for your dog to sleep. Condensation was not a problem in our field test. There are roof vents and the doors zip down to expose a full mesh door on each end. This provided ample ventilation. Floor space can fit three tall men with no problem.

I spent a long night in a Eureka tent once during a spring snow storm in the Boulderfields on Long's Peak. The tent collapsed in the wind multiple times and always sprang back up. That little 3 season Eureka kept 3 climbers warm and dry through a very cold and damp night. Since that trip I have been sold on the quality of Eureka tents. If you happen to have someone on your list this year looking for a bombproof tent, I highly recommend the Tundraline. At $299 the Eureka Tundraline is really a steal for what you get. Comparable tents from other major brands would run you close to $500.
