Sandwiched between the northern border of Nepal and the southern border of Tibet lies the kingdom of Mustang. No, not a magical land of fast Fords, but a dry high desert which served as a sort-of trade highway centuries ago. The traditions here are Buddhist, and date back into ancient times.
In Mustang there are caves. Not just any caves, but caves that were carved by humans centuries ago. These caves are halfway up huge cliffs of crusty broken rock. Most locals don't dare to climb these crumbling cliffs, and most don't care to. But it is said that within these caves lies ancient secrets left by those who created them. Now a group of National Geographic sponsored climbers have made their way into the country and are exploring the caves, finding many ancient treasures along the way.
I watched a program on PBS last week that explained the process and followed the climbers/archeologists/art historians through the process of accessing and documenting the caves. It is fascinating to me what is still out there, undiscovered. Entire texts, and tombs just rest there as they did hundreds and thousands of years ago. I can't wait to see what they discover next. Check your local listings for the next airing of Lost Cave Temples of the Himalaya.

This is an amazing find...I saw the video as they pulled out 15 duffle bags of the texts they disovered. I think the true treasure lies in decifering the texts themsevles. I look forward that...Michael M
