Peak of the Week - Mt Sherman

Mt Sherman - 14,036

mount-shermanAbout 7 miles East/SouthEast of Leadville Colorado lies a very popular 14er, Mt Sherman. This peak is popular for a few reasons. It's proximity to a jumping-off point, and it's relatively short, non-technical route.  Notice I didn't say "easy".  Any trail that is at 14,000 feet will not be easy for some. I say this without having climbed Sherman yet though, so we'll see. It is recommended as a beginner 14er due to it's ease of access and short trail in comparison with other Colorado 14ers.

In 1851 Andrew Carnegie had this to say about Mt Sherman in his book Round the World - "As night approaches we get higher and higher up the far-famed Rocky Mountains, and before dark reach the most elevated point, at Sherman, eight thousand feet above tide. But our preconceived notions of the Rocky Mountains, derived from pictures of Fremont a lá NapoleonAlps, have received a rude shock; we only climb high plains--not a tree, nor a peak, nor a ravine; when at the top we are but on level ground--a brown prairie, "only this, and nothing more."

Doesn't sound too exciting despite it's impressive elevation. But Sherman does sound like a great way to get some sweet views of the Rockies by being eye-level with them. And a perfect way to see how your body does at elevation and enjoy a 14er.

I'm planning on climbing Mt Sherman with a group of fellow outdoorzy members in a few weeks. Our bi-annual beard-growing/peak baggin/guy time/beer drinking trip.  (in that order) Weather permitting we're hoping to use it as a warm-up for Mt Massive and Harvard. I'll report back on how that went with t Trip Report on Outdoorzy and maybe some pics here.

  3. Update: Climbed Sherman yesterday. Great weather. Took about 4.5 hours round trip, with a lunch on the summit. Route finding wasn't difficult. Menacing clouds rolled in as we decended. Some people were still on the ridge but we saw them turn around from below. Full trip report to come soon.
