Ice Storm 2009

Many in the mid-section of the nation were without power most of last week. Between 300-500,000 in the state of Kentucky alone. We had some sporadic power outages in my area due to the ice storm. Most of the damage in the area was due to trees freezing, then snapping under the tremendous weight of the ice.  I spent the weekend on my roof with a chainsaw. Not the most safe place to be using a power tool with dozens of spinning blades, but hey, I couldn't leave it. We were very fortunate that none of the limbs came through the roof. Some weren't so lucky.

Here are a few pics of the roof before I cleaned it up.

At least it was kinda pretty...

  3. When I read stories like this it makes me appreciate living in Tucson. I can't stand living where the weather plays such a devastating role on life in general.

  4. Kentucy...red state...Obama... MIA...eating expensive beef in the White House, Super Bowl Party...not even a flyover? Change we can believe in? This is not what we voted for...but maybe it's what we deserve. CNN...shame on you! Look what you've helped to create.

  5. Obama signed a declaration "state of emergency" one hour after Gov. Beshear notified him. We received help from the National Guard, many electirc companies outside of the state, water and food. I think he did good and I hope that he will declare it a major or national disaster.

  6. While I was freezing and scared and looking for help, I kept wondering if we had voted "right", if we would have gotten any help. I have never felt so deserted in my whole life -- and that's 60 years! Two helicopters in seven days. And both of them were Kentucky Utilities looking for lines.

  8. I am from Marion Ky and this is our 13th day without power..I won't do the blame game but everyone needs to learn from this, no matter where you live.....we all need to be able to survive on our own for at least 4 days.....we live about a mile from town and no one came to our home to check on us..nope, they said they did but national guard did not.......we have pulled together as a neighborhood and helped each other......
This has cost all of us so much its terrible..Buying generators, gas to keep them going, etc.....I am using a generator to get on the net.
Get prepared, this was an ice storm but many things can happen, don't wait for help to come.
