Rob Gauntlett, a 2008 National Geographic Adventurer of the Year, and a friend perished in an ice-climbing accident on Mont Blanc (France’s highest peak) last weekend.
Rob was named an Adventurer of the Year by National Geographic for finishing a 1 year, 26,000-mile expedition in April on which he traveled from the magnetic North Pole to the magnetic South Pole. Both adventurers had also done a 396-day ski, sail, cycle and dog sled expedition that National Geographic Adventure Magazine called “the most madcap adventure we saw all year.” being he youngest Briton to scale Everest at 19 years old.
His climbing partner, James Atkinson was said to be a "top guy" and a great outdoor sports enthusiast.

James Hooper (in the picture on the right), another 2008 National Geographic Adventurer of the Year, was also on the expedition in the French Alps but was unharmed. It is said that Gauntlett and Hooper had split up earlier in the day and taken different routes with two less-experienced climbing friends.
It's sad to lose two guys who were really not even in their prime yet. Two guys with more guts than most of us reading this blog post. Their families will be in our thoughts and prayers.
