Nau is Back

Wend Magazine is reporting that Nau is coming back. Nau was a clothing company that progressively mixed fashion with an eco-friendly mantra. They were set to become the next Patagiona but financing troubles plagued them. So much so that they had to shut their doors a few months ago. It was sad because they had a great line and a great mission.

Horny Toad has purchased the remainder of the companies assets and is planning on relaunching the brand. Hopefully we’ll see them doing the same progressive things they were doing before. Good luck. I can’t wait to get Horny Nau!

Meredith’s Ride: days 46 - 48

Day 46, Tuesday, June 24, Little Falls, NY to Albany, NY
We rode 69 miles today. In the morning we rode beside the Mohawk River in the Mohawk Valley with a very strong tail wind. In the afternoon we rode a bike trail around the city of Albany, NY that overlooked the river in many places. Excelllant cycling and beautiful country.

Our tour is coming to a close. We have 3 long days and one 18 mile day remaining. I have had alot of fun but I am ready to come back to Bowling Green and be with Harriette. Seven weeks is a long time.

Along the bike path in Albany, NY.

Day 47, Wednesday, June 25, Albany, NY to Brattleboro, VT
This was a 76 miles of long hill climbs and long down hill sections. We climbed 6,000 feet of elevation this day.

This section is in the White Mountain and just lovely. We had two mountain streams and crossed the Hudson River in the afternoon.

Day 48, Thursday, June 26, Brattleboro, VT to Burlington, MA
We rode 87 miles today and we had two long hills and they were hard. One had a grade of 15%. We had a little shower and low temperatures in the low 60’s.

I am 18 miles from the ocean. We plan to ride that in the morning as a group of 42 riders. Ben is coming this evening and will be with me when I finish this tour.

I want to thank again everyone that has posted comments on my BLOG, sent email, and phone calls.
I am ready to return to Bowling Green and be with my family, friends and Rhett Butler. I am looking forward to next week.

One very used pair of cycling gloves going to the trash.

Bra Saves Life

This one is kind of interesting. I’ve heard of using flares, using smoke, but a bra… haven’t heard that one before. But I have to admit, that’s pretty resourceful. I bet those lumberjacks were like… vee have shtricken gold!!!

From the AP, via NBC

BERLIN - An American hiker stranded in the Bavarian Alps for nearly three days was rescued after using her sports bra as a signal, police in southern Germany said Monday.

Berchtesgaden police officer Lorenz Rasp said that he helped lift 24-year-old Jessica Bruinsma of Colorado to safety by helicopter on Thursday after she attracted the attention of lumberjacks by attaching her sports bra to a cable used to move timber down the mountain.

“She’s a very smart girl, and she acted very resourcefully,” said Rasp. “She kept her shirt and jacket for warmth, but thought the sports bra could work as a signal.”….. continue story here

Summer DVDs–The Spiderwick Chronicles

My guess is that the adventurous types (us) grew up reading fantastical stories with heroes and heroines saving the day (or world), fending off evil villains, and finding new challenges to pursue. Personally I spent days with my nose in the DragonLance Series and it is comforting to know that The Spiderwick Chronicles are continuing to advocate exploration, adventure and challenge!

The Spiderwick Chronicles are a series of five books condensed into a 101 minute DVD. The two-disc Field Guide Edition includes not only the movie, which is tons of fun for adults and children, but special features like interviews, explanation of the characters, inspiration for the film, deleted scenes and way more!

I have two nephews, 8 and 5, and this film is fantastic for them! It is not too scary, it is action packed, and it creates a sense of adventure through imagination. The only semi-warning would be a few choice words uttered by the lead character; the director mentioned they decided to use some adult language to make the teens seem more modern.

The acting is good (Freddie Highmore, the lead, is the little boy from Charlie and the Chocolate Factory) the story line is well thought out, and the special effects are believable.

This movie was tons of fun and really took me back to my childhood adventures!

Track the PrimalQuest Teams with SPOT

As you may know, one of the biggest and baddest adventure races on the planet is underway. Primal Quest 2008 got underway yesterday and is running through this week and next week. Teams are racing through Montana and encountering a number of obstacles as they make their way through the different adventure sports involved.

This year you can track the teams here through SPOT technology. SPOT Satellite Messengers are small handheld devices you can take in the backcountry to signal out for help in case of an emergency. They use satellite technology so you can get a signal out even if your cell phone is out of range

“This year we are really elevating the Primal Quest experience by teaming up with SPOT and offering the best, custom leaderboard and mapping software we’ve seen to date,” states Don Mann, Primal Quest Director.

Race fans can register for a chance to win a SPOT Satellite Messenger signed by the winning team and learn more about Primal Quest Montana 2008 Presented by SPOT at www.findmespot.com/primalquest

Wanderer Imports—Natural Positive Jewelry

Growing up I seemed to differ from my other female teen friends in one important way; I did not like jewelry. Crazy, I know, but I preferred the free flowing less cluttered look. I still don’t have my ears pierced even.

What I didn’t realize until my adult years is that I simply preferred going natural and keeping my jewelry simple. Recently on a trip to Cades Cove in the Smoky Mountains, I decided I wanted a necklace that made me feel natural, beautiful, and sexy; hard goals to achieve while camping, but The Koru spiral shaped necklace by Wandererimports made it easy.

The Koru necklace came via mail from a small company based in North Carolina who make a variety of elegant and natural jewelry. Each piece came with a title and an information card explaining the meaning, origin and inspiration for the jewelry.

I felt a deep connection to each piece due to the detailed themes and meanings. I feel like I’m wearing a piece of nature and passing on positive vibes every time I wear them.

Price $19.50

Meredith’s Ride: Days 39 - 41

Day 39, Tuesday, June 17th, Wooster, OH to Niles, OH
I am glad the Harriette sent back my warmer clothing because I had on everything I owned this morning. Beautiful farming area and the wet weather had not effected this part of the United States.
Just a great day to ride a bike.

Day 40, Wednesday, June 18th, Niles, OH to Erie, PA
Up this morning to find low 50’s temperatures and light rain. We covered 89 miles but after lunch I found the Sag wagon. Everyone had a Root Beer at the White Turkey Root Beer Stand . After that my friend Bill talked me into a ride to the hotel in Erie’s downtown area.

Day 41, Thursday, June 19th, Rest Day in Erie, PA
This is my last rest day for my tour. We have one week of cycling left to make the final destination in Boston, MA.

Today is wash the clothes and rest up for the final week. We will have a lot of hills between Erie and Boston. I plan to have lunch in downtown Erie by the lake and a nice long nap.

We have completed 2,800 plus miles and the goal is 3,393. We are close.

I want to thank everyone for the comments on the BLOG, email messages and phone calls. I am ready to finish this tour and be back to Bowling Green. I miss Harriette, family, friends and Rhett Butler.

Ben will visit me in Boston for a few days then I will be home on the 30th of June.

Our van that carries all the equipment.
Jim, Tracey and Clark are our leaders
