As many of us outdoor nuts are aware, Into the Wild was snubbed by the Academy this year. Hal Holbrook was nominated for best supporting actor and was dissed last night. He did an amazing job. But I have to give cred where cred is due, Javier Bardem. He was pretty frikin scary in No Country for Old Men. Since watching that movie, I have stopped flipping coins for good.
What do you think, Hal or Javier?

We do know one thing for sure, if there was an award for worst haircut, Javier would have that all wrapped up.

yea, i'd agree they were snubbed...not that they couldn't have been nominated in other categories...but what i found the funniest/saddest...no nominations for eddie vedder for original sdtrk...but THREE separate nominations for Disney songs!! c'mon, i mean, i will sing along to any song from the little mermaid given the chance...but NO nods for into the wild??? that soundtrack was raw and moving...sometimes the academy can't appreciate a movie that examines a persons soul!
i can't wait to see this movie, i really loved the book.
couldn't afford to see it in theaters.
while i've not seen the movie, the book was very readable. True to Krakauer form though, I think anyway, he took WAY too many liberties with someone he didn't know at all and speculated too much about the kid's feelings. honestly, i'm not disappointed that something of jon's caught some slack. Again though, i'd still like to see the movie for what the baseline story is. To those of you who have seen it; is it worth seeing soon?
Personally I really think it is worth seeing. I feel like the overall message that gets conveyed at the end is some powerful stuff.
to comment on krakauer, and the movie...yes!!! see it, rent it, buy it. i have read three or four krakauer books...and by halfway through the second book i'm pretty much like "man, i don't care how this chapter of this persons life relates to one of your many celebrated personal accomplishments" but...i do feel that the speculation of chris mccandless' feelings and emotions had a lot of truth to it...if you read the book, it is hard to imagine somebody like him feeling too far from the assumed emotions portrayed in the book. we do know he was a bright individual, that never could fully connect with the materialism of society, i do think that many of the points of view presented as his own couldn't have been too far off track. he was only human, a remarkable human, with faults. but how many of us can say we held ourselves to our own convictions?
Bardem earned the Oscar for sure ... Holbrook was affecting in "Into the Wild" but Bardem was like from another planet or something. It did perpetuate the stereotype that convincingly nutty characters area shoo-in for best supporting, but what's the Oscars w/out cliches?
I didn't care for "Into the Wild" all that much because I didn't find myself rooting for the character. Struck me as spoiled and smug. I have to admit I took a liking to that "Big Hard Sun" song after hearing it a few times.
its bullshit!!!!
my boyfriend is so much influenced by this fucking movie and he is planning to move away for three years as now he wants to live in the wild.
i hate this movie
