Mountain Dew Glow Stick - Not

December 15th, 2007 Wade

So Buster sent me this viral video that has been going around. It claims that you can turn a regular mountain dew into a glow stick by adding Hydrogen Peroxide and Baking Soda. I was shocked and amazed at first… mostly cause I hadn’t heard of it. But then I got a little skeptical. So, Emile and I decided to try it out this morning….

First, watch the video, if you haven’t seen it…

Mountain Dew Glows!!!! Mountain Dew Light Hack!!! - Watch today’s top amazing videos here

So, the result is… ITS A HOAX

Yep, we got way too excited that this might work. We were like two kids running around getting the ingredients together. Then it didn’t work. We followed the directions exactly too. So, we did a simple Google search and found references of all the other dummies who tried this too. It doesn’t work. It isn’t real. We figure the guy in the video must have put glow stick liquid into the peroxide bottle to fool people.

Oh well. And the world could have saved all that money on glow sticks… Maybe it’s a video planted by the Mountain Dew marketing team to drum up some excitement.

Sorry it didn’t work. I was excited about it too. I started thinking about next summers possible float trip.

If you used the kind of hydrogen peroxide you can buy off the
shelf at the grocery or drug store, it might have failed because
the peroxide was only a 3% solution. That’s whats sold in those
venues. I wonder if straight, full strength H2O2 would have worked?

I agree with Kate There are different % of hydrogen peroxide, but don’t try to find full strenght , it will burn through your skin. 6% is available behind the counter. The video doesn’t show what percent was used. Anyone try with other % ?

If u can slow down the vid. i think it shows you what percentile he’s using, but that’s besides the point. in order for the reaction to work properly you would need these ingredients. • Fluorescent dye
    • Cyalume - phenyl oxalate ester
    • Hydrogen peroxide

Hydrogen peroxide has many uses from propellants to hair bleach to mouth wash. Hair bleach typically has concentrations of 15% while a typical 6 inch glow stick contains a small amount, 0.5%. Medical uses are around the 3% mark.
