With real snow season right around the corner the desire to get out and enjoy the last scraps of any summer sport is thick. Ok Fruita weekend cancelled.. My desire wasn’t great enough to go camp in sub-freezing temps, desert wind, and mixed precipatation. No visit with Tater Tot, the unofficial mayor of Fruita and well deserving of his own blog. If you make it to Fruita, (If you don’t know you better ask somebody) seek out this amazing local personality. Be prepared for hugs-a-plenty and be careful when he goes in for a cheek kiss. If you’re slippin he will sneak one pass the goalie and get you on the lips.
So I guess that leaves riding whatever is dry around here and watching Mike race cross.

Mike, off the front.
American Cross fans, all six of us turned out in full force. You know hundreds of people in Europe come out to these races to watch, cheer, and drink. We have football and nachos.

“Frenchie” turned 72 on Saturday and was out to race both days. On Sunday he had a few too many post race “recovery drinks” and drove his car onto the snowy course… race officials were not pleased.
We got off our bikes Saturday just in time, the weather came in hard. 10 inches in the valley, who knows what we got up top. The weather channel says we are getting some warmer temps this week,,, lets hope we can keep some of this early dump as base.
Best part about cross? Hot racing action rain snow or shine!

Including snowman, 7 race fans on day 2.

Deep in the pain cave

Wet clean up, aisle one.
I did manage to schmooze my hands onto a bunch of FRS this weekend. I had tried this stuff a little before and I have to say it rules! I am pretty particular about what I consume before, during and after training / racing. When you find what works stick with it. Personally I have found a mix of Accelerade/Hammer Gel/Endurox/Big Mac’s to be what makes my engine purr.

FRS now added to the regement for pre-game /maintenance. Try some, tastes good, tell your local shop to get it. I’m not usually a sucker for endorcement, I personally would tout about anything for a check. However, Lance sees fit to put his name on this stuff instead of the newest male enhancement formula.

We announced to the public this week that we are offering our members a benefits package that expands beyond the boundaries of Outdoorzy. Many of you are aware of this already and may have taken advantage of one of your benefits already. Things like a 15% discount at Moosejaw.com, $3 off a subscription to WEND Magazine… possibly the best thing to hit print. But I also wanted to mention another benefit today… a discount on web hosting!

This might interest our Business Directory members quite a bit since you are running businesses and may need a web presence, or may want to switch hosting services to a more economical plan. And some of you might be interested in creating a blog site or a even an e-commerce site of your own. ImOutdoorsHosting.com is providing a great hosting discount for Outdoorzy Members. They’ve waived all setup fees and are offering their very robust hosting plan for just $4.95/mo (normally $6.95).
So if you do want to start your own site up, check these guys out. Its a steal on web hosting. But just like our other benefits, you have to be a member to get the discount. But then again, Outdoorzy is free, so quit yer whinin.
PS - we’ll be announcing another benefit next week…. then hopefully, another, and another…

As you may have noticed we have new bloggers on the scene here at Outdoorzy. With snow falling in the upper elevations we have asked two people who are close to snow sports action to join our blogging team.
Blow Snow

An avid skier, skateboarder, mountain biker, and snowboarder, Blow Snow knows a few things about the trails in Colorado. He’s lived in such interesting locales as Costa Rica and Mexico, but has planted himself recently in Vail.
Mikey One Sock

We don’t quite know where he got his name yet but we do know that he was on the US Ski Team and is now fighting his way into competitive Mountain Biking in Colorado. Mikey will have some interesting stories for sure, but we are most interested in the “One Sock Saga”…
Welcome to both these guys and we look forward to their wit and wisdom!

Winter is really here. It’s dumping outside,, not that weird October stuff we usually get down in the valley. The real deal snow. It even smells like winter. A few mountains in Summit are open already. Nothing too spectacular, but it’s still shredding. Vail set to open Nov 16, the Beav Nov 21. How am I going to make this winter work? How after 8 years of 100+ days on the mountain am I going to be able to handle this 9-5, weekend warrior deal? Especially when from my office I can see the white slopes? Guess I’ll be making the commute to Keystone a few times a week for night laps. At least my office has a “one foot rule” for pow days. This is going to be torture. From my office window it even looks like we could be open. I know there is some kid up there right now, hiking for turns. Matterhood probably has a full functioning rail jam in session as I type this.
Well last night was the sneak sneak double secret preview for the snowboard lifestyle epic “Art For Art’s Sake”. Previewed in the bedroom of Chief Filmer, Producer, Editor, Evil Genius,,, Rockin Bob Awesome. Look for it out soon, and check the “Director’s Cut” drunk commentary we laid down. Yeah I’m still bro.

Monday thousands of bloggers wrote about global warming to inform their readers of this important issue. Now, today I’m blogging on a different topic the same day as thousands of other bloggers. This time the issue is poverty. CARE, an organization dedicated to wiping out poverty, has asked bloggers to write on this subject today.
Click here to learn more about what CARE volunteers are doing around the country today, maybe in your neighborhood. You can also go to CARE’s “Get Involved” page to learn how you can volunteer or donate.

Ahhhhh Jakes!

I’m happy to announce a new benefit for Outdoorzy members. Jakes Jamaica is offering us a deal if you book 4 nights you can get the 5th night free!
If you’re not familiar with Jakes, let me explain my excitement. Jakes is a bohemian, artsy, funky, laid-back, outdoorzy resort on the south coast of Jamaica. It’s nowhere near the resort areas. In fact, you will have to take a cab or Jakes can get you a drive to take you the 2 hours through the mountains to their property. Jakes rests on a 10 foot cliff overlooking the Caribbean. There are beach dogs sprinkled here and there, hammocks strung between trees, a saltwater pool, and an interesting library of music you can just take back to your cottage if you like. And the cottages are amazing. They are funky, and will be like nowhere else you’ve stayed. Treasure Beach is the community this place is located in, and the locals are friendly folk. We hopped on board a boat one morning with a fisherman named Dennis and caught some sweet fish, then took them to a bar made of driftwood about a 1/2 mile off shore on stilts, and the resident red stripe swinging, dread-locked chef cooked it up.
Jakes has quite a clientèle too, including Bono of U2 fame. Oh, and me! Check out my trip report from my visit here. Rates start at $95 a night.
If you’re not an Outdoorzy member today, join up and take advantage of this offer for your next vacation. You won’t be sorry!

Guyot Designs Firefly

- Nylon Tether
- Granite-Grade Glass Filled Nylon
- On/Off Button, Dimmer
- LED lights
- O-ring seal for tight fit
Some gear just begs to be tested. Ever since I saw this little gem this past summer I had to get my hands on it. A paddling partner busted it out on a sandy island we were hunkered down on for the night. When the light faded outside. He clicked a button on the top of his Nalgene bottle and it lit up. I had seen ads for it, but assumed the light wasn’t sufficient enough to do much good. But I was wrong. This little Firefly lit up a 4-5 foot radius with a light glow. It wasn’t exactly beaming with light, but it gave off an ambient glow which was easy enough to do simple chores under and not trip over the tent guy lines when going to pee.
Guyot Designs created the Firefly, and it is easy to see why. It fills two purposes, which is something backcountry travellers love. It is a lid for your bottle and it turns your water bottle into a lantern as well. A nylon tether keeps the lid attached to the bottle. Which I found nice. Often when I drink from a Nalgene or other plastic bottles, when I turn the bottle up, the lid comes clapping down in my face. With the tether, the lid dangles below the bottle as you drink. Another nice feature is that it is easy to grip. It has small handles around the edges to grip with. A small screwdriver is needed to access the battery compartment in this lid. It does take a minute or two to change them out. The on/off button clicks easily and has a dimmer switch as well for those close encounters in the tent. Also remember that if you use a splashguard on your bottles to prevent splashing while you drink, then you’ll need to use a transluscent one so the light will shine through.
The Firefly is not for the ultralight trips. It weighs more than the bottle itself. But if you take a lantern on trips, it is an extremely efficient way to make your bottle pull double-duty. Not to mention it will wow your friends and make them jealous. Which is always nice.
