I am usnig it on a bottle that is "smoke" colored and that has an effect on the amount of light. I think I need a completely transparent bottle to get the best effect. With a knife notch out your "target area." On the ol' mug it's side of the drinking hole. On the lantern it'd be the side closet to the button. ENJOY!! THis lantern doesn't give off boat loads of light, but it's great for in-tent, especially if you have small children...great light light.
