Ventucky

I saw this blog post on the Piton today, “More SUV Vs. Cyclist Road Rage, Ventucky Style”
I recently reported on the cyclist who was attacked by a motorist in Portland, OR. This is just another case of road rage against cyclists, nothing new.
So, now that you’ve got your daily dose of “Man that sucks,” I’ll get on with the meat of this post, the term “Ventucky.” I first heard this when I was in Ventura, CA a few years ago. I spend quite a bit of time in that little town for work and absolutely love it. It’s got all the attractions of a SoCal coastal town, minus the tourists. But I’m not working for the Ventura Tourism Commission today, so back to Ventucky. I was going surfing with a guy that lived there in town, he was giving me a lesson since I had never surfed. He found out I was born and raised in Kentucky and said, “Ever heard of Ventucky?” He then went on to explain that when someone from Ventura does something “redneck” that is called Ventucky. It is also a term for Ventura sometimes because Ventura is sort of a small town and not as developed as other SoCal towns like Santa Barbara. Urban Dictionary has a funny definition for it. But since I spend my time between Kentucky and Ventura, I aint laughin ya’ll…. next time I’m out thar and I hear “Ventucky” I’m gon whoop some ace! Okay, maybe I’ll just laugh.

Pimp Your Rack

Yeah wannabe gangstas aren’t the only ones pimpin their rides today. Now Outdoorzies can do it too.

skull rack

Pimp your Roof Rack with this Skull end cap. Is this the vehicular version of putting charms on your Crocs? Or a way to say…”If I weren’t a kayaker I’d be in a biker gang.”

Omelet in a bag

Here is a quick and easy way to make some “omelets” while camping. I use the term omelets very loosely as really this turns out to just be some scrambled eggs loaded with other stuff in it.

1 serving, takes about 10 min.

What you need:

  • Small to medium sized pot
  • Water to fill pot
  • Fire/Stove to boil water
  • 2 – 3 eggs (depending on how many eggs you feel like eating)
  • A “zip lock” type bag (BAG MUST BE ABLE TO BE USED IN BOILING WATER! See comments section below)
  • Salt and Pepper (not to be confused with Salt and Peppa, the early 90s hit female rap duo)
  • Any other item you would like in your omelet (ham, cheese, mushrooms, baby seal…nah, don’t do that, they are endangered)

First get your water boiling. After the water is boiling pretty good, turn it down a bit so that it isn’t a rolling boil. Crack your eggs and drop the yolkey goodness into the zip lock bag. Then dispose of the shells, adding shells to the omelet is gross and not advised. Then add your other items such and cheese, meats, and seasoning. The meats should already be cooked, you don’t want to put raw meat in your omelet.

Next close the zip lock back and lay it in the boiling water, every minute or so pull the bag out for a few seconds and mash the concoction around in the bag between your fingers. You should be able to see the eggs cooking. Repeat this process of dipping in and out of the water each minute until the eggs are cooked to your satisfaction. Be sure to watch the zip lock bag and try to keep it from melting.

Once finished you can either eat the eggs right out of the bag or pour them on a plate like the fancy little camper you are.

I hope you enjoy your omelet in a bag!

An Idea for Your Adventure To Do List

Some of you may have seen this already, but we added a “To Do List” as an option on your profile pages. We all have thought about the “things we have to do before we croak”. So why not put them down on your profile so you can start checking them off. Just click on “My Profile” in the upper right-hand corner on Outdoorzy, then click “To Do List” on the list of options to edit on the left. You can also check the items off as you get them done! Se my profile page and look in the lower left to see what a To Do list looks like when it’s finished.

If you’re at a loss for things to put on your To Do List, here is a cool idea…

Who’s the Fattest

The Trust for America’s Health released a Study on Americas Obesity Epidemic recently. It seems that not only is America fat, as most of us know, but we’re getting fatter by the year. And this study isn’t talking about people who are in the “Overweight” category. It examines the “Clinically Obese” category. Which are the people at serious health risk. Here are a few highlights…

Healthy | Overweight | Obese
Starting with the fattest and working down, here are the states with the highest percentages of obese people: Mississippi, West Virginia, Alabama, Louisiana, Tennessee, South Carolina, Kentucky, Arkansas, Indiana, Michigan. Colorado has the lowest percentage of obese people.

Obese is defined as having a BMI (Body Mass Index) of 30 or more. A BMI of 25-29 is considered Overweight.

BMI = [(Weight in pounds) x 703] DIVIDED BY [(Height in inches) x (Height in inches)]

As outdoor sports enthusiasts we all know our fair share about staying fit. It’s not always easy either. A Winter of laying in front of the TV can quickly put you into the “Overweight” category. We do have the advantage over many others however. We enjoy activities that inherently keep us fit. This means that we don’t always have to try as hard as others who don’t necessarily enjoy skiing, mountain biking, trail running, backpacking, and other sports we love. We, as Outdoorzies should take on the task of educating our co-workers, friends, and family about the activities and nutrition we enjoy.

Climbing Ban Remains on Cave Rock

Cave Rock is an iconic image in the Lake Tahoe area. Other than that, it is also the source of a controversy that involves the climbing community, the Access Fund, the Forest Service, and the Washoe tribe. Cave Rock is considered sacred by the Washoe tribe of the area. The Forest Service wants to protect the archaeological and cultural aspects of Cave Rock. The climbing community and the Access Fund believe there is also room for rock climbing in the area.

However, a three panel federal appeals court ruled Monday that a ban on climbing Cave Rock is still in affect. The Access Fund argued that public lands cannot be closed for religious purposes. Critics also argue that any insignificant damage that could be caused to the rock could not come close to the damage done by the federal government when they blasted tunnels in the rock for highways in 1931 and 1957.

4Wheel Bob Summits White Mountain… by Wheelchair!

This story amazed me. White Mountain is a 14,246 ft peak in the Sierra Nevada range of California. It is supposed to be one of the “easier” 14,000+ foot mountains in the Sierras. But that wouldn’t be so if you were going to try to summit by wheelchair. Which is what 4Wheel Bob did this past week.
4Wheel Bob had a support team which included a few Outdoorzy members; Rick McCharles, and Tom Mangen. Tom posted the story on his blog, Two Heel Drive. Go check the story and photos out when you get a chance. This guy is amazing!

Learn to Roll

This cool video, posted by exchile.com on Youtube gives a good overview of how to roll a kayak. I would suggest taking a class to really get the feel. I took a roll class several years back and within a few sessions I was rolling successfully. Unfortunately I didn’t practice much, so I’m sure my roll wouldn’t be so good these days. But, I am proud to say, I do have the wet exit perfected.

Should We Add “Glacier Surfing” to the Activity List?

This Hawaiian surfer decided his next extreme challenge would be to surf the wave generated by a crumbling glacier. The debris looks huge from this thing and it creates a pretty mean looking wave. Not to mention how cold the water has to be. Props go out to this guy for catching this one. The guy on the jet ski towing him out looks like he’s having fun with it too.

Glacier Surfing Video (turn your volume down)

(I would have just posted the video here, but there is some foul language in there. And Outdoorzy is a family site :) Count the number of Sh*t’s coming out of the onlookers mouth, lol)
