This story is a testament to some of the tried and true rules that backpackers and outdoorsman live by. Take extra supplies, always bring the 10 essentials, leave specific information about where you are going, take a good map, and have a "plan B".
I also couldn't help but notice the stark contrast between this rescue effort and the one we saw recently on Mt Hood in Oregon. There apparently was a search conducted for three days in this case. Whereas on Mt Hood recently we saw the search go on for nine days.
I am not trained in search and rescue, and not fit to critique these efforts at all. I know that there are probably multiple factors; such as the fact that on Mt Hood the rescuers had information to lead them to a specific place, and the fact that there was national media and pressure from the public to rescue those climbers. But, it seems that this woman could have been found; she had a fire every night, and she was camped in the same spot waiting for rescue.
With all that said, I'm glad she was lucky enough to be discovered by the two Kottke brothers and rescued subsequently. It's nice to see a happy ending. Thanks to those brothers, and thanks to the search and rescue workers who worked so hard searching and finding her in the dark.
