Single Speed Mountain Bikes?

So, over the past few years I’ve heard about some mountain bikers who have gone to single speed bikes. It would seem that these people would struggle on uphills. They would argue that they are getting a harder workout. They might also argue that single speeds are less maintenance, cost less, and allow the rider to slow down a bit and enjoy the scenery. It’s almost an argument for “not” mountain biking in the traditional sense of blasting up and down hills. It may also be a good way to integrate a harder workout or a way to slow the pace down of a normally intense ride. It sounds interesting to me and even provoking. It may be something worth trying.

Here’s an article I found in the Tuscon Citizen online that explains some of the basic reasons some mountain bikers move to single speeds.

Cycle the Gorge

This looks like a fun event up in Northern Kentucky this Summer. Bluegrass and cycling. Cool combo! The races coincide with some local festivals. It looks like there is even a “criterium” race. Where cyclists do fast laps jockeying for position.

Comments Functionality is Up!

You can now leave comments on Gear Reviews, Gear Lists, and Member Profiles.

It’s sweet!

Go ahead.  Drop by a friend’s profile and try it out. Just type whatever comment you want, then that member will get a personal message asking them to approve that comment. The same goes for when someone leaves a comment on one of your Gear Reviews, Gear Lists, or on your Profile. You will get a message to approve it or not. Once approved, it shows up.

More cool stuff to come in the next weeks and months, so stay tuned. And thanks Lynn for doing the voodoo that you do so well. :)

We’re in the Backcountry

Our post yesterday got mentioned in the Backcountry Blog today. This is a blog that supports the Backcountry.com gear site. You can find some good stuff on there. Especially if you’re into skiing or snowboarding. They have posted alot about those topics lately.

Check out the post on their site, and definately check out Bluezones.com when you get a chance and take that longevity quiz.

The Fountain of Youth?

My wife turned me on to a new site today that I’ve gotten some great info from. BlueZones.com is a site which focuses on longevity and living life in a better way. One thing that stood out to me was a diagram showing cross-over between the three cities in the world with the longest average life span. Sardinia, Italy - Loma Linda, CA/USA - Okinawa, Japan

The cross-over between these cities is interesting. I’m going to try to incorporate more of these things into my life for sure.

Longevity Chart

There is also a section called BlueZones Compass that has a quiz you can take. It is based on your your gender, age, height, weight, and then a series of questions about your lifestyle. Then it calculates your projected life expectancy. This is a great tool to help you understand what areas you can focus on to increase your life expectancy and improve your overall health.

Thanks to Dan Buettner for putting this site together and for all the research and work he’s put into this project. I recommend you check it out. Very cool!

Mt Whitney Video

I’m tagging along with a buddy this Summer and a few other friends to climb Mt Whitney. I hiked to the summit back in 2001 but since my buddy wants to bag it, why not tag along and see what it feels like to do it again. We may also try to summit Mt Muir while we’re up there as well.

I found this video today and thought it was a great representation of the trail. Now this guy goes from trailhead to summit in 6 hours. The roundtrip probably took him 10 or so. But we are flatlanders from the East and we will go up to Trial Camp and stay there a night to acclimate to the altitude. No sense in puking our guts up if we don’t have to
